Project Update - June 2025

Posted on 26th June, 2025
The search for Cnut's Minster Church has continued to be our primary focus:
  • We are awaiting permission to sample the mortar in St. Botolph's Church in Hadstock for carbon dating.  We hope to receive some funding from the Battlefields Trust to pay for this exercise.
  • The historical review and investigation into charters and patronage of St. Andrew's Church in Ashingdon and St. Nicholas's Church in Canewdon have so far not provided any concrete links to the early 11th Century and we are reviewing our next steps at these sites.  This may include ground penetrating radar surveys.
  • We are continuing to investigate the charters and patronage of our other candidates for Cnut's Minster.
  • We are looking at the building materials of the churches as another aspect of dating these candidates.
We have been looking at potential battlefield sites, but feel that this can not be progressed further until we have determined the location of Cnut's Minster Church.

A presentation was given at the Essex Record Office on 21st June 2025, giving an update on the progress of the project since our last talk there in October 2023.  Here is a link to the slides presented: ERO Presentation 2025-06-21
